Graduate Acting Prerequisites

Tisch graduate acting students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. M.F.A. applicants from all disciplines of undergraduate study, not just those who have majored in theatre, are equally welcome, though some acting experience is preferred.

The student body is diverse and multicultural and although some students come directly - from undergraduate school, others join the program after having been out of school for a time. The more variety of study and experience our student body can bring to the program, the more exciting the work that can be created, both in class and on stage. We are interested in the personal story of each individual in the school as well as in creating an ensemble out of each class. We make our selection of students and organize the work around that point of view.

We search for students of talent and "soul," suspecting that those two attributes go together. And if we take you in, we fully intend that you will graduate, which is why we audition over 900 students to find the 18 whom we want and who want us.

To apply to the Graduate Acting program you must:

  1. Have a bachelors degree or be in the process of completing one. A few exceptions may be made to this rule.
  2. Complete the Tisch Graduate Application.  Please visit the Tisch Graduate Admissions page to apply online or download the application.
  3. Audition.  For complete audition information, click on the Graduate Acting Audition link.

Approximately 50 auditionees from the first round will be asked to come to New York for one to two weekend days in March for the final "Callback" round.  The entering class of 16-19 students will be selected from the callback sessions.
